The new feature of this version correspond to a request from customer : Being able to define the start time for the race by an absolut time.

The user define the hour:minute:second for the start time. This usage is common in Nordic country and USA and so on.

This way, boats with different rating have different start time and are supposed to finish the race at the same moment.

The feature is in optional.

Correction of a bug for saving the position of the start line. (comitee and pin mark)

I am currently working on :

- Saving data if you leave the application (time remaining, settings and so on)

- Displaying the speed and compute the time to the start line

- New page with integrated map and position of the boat, the comitee and the pin

- Improved look.

How to Use the Distance to the Line

First thing, to be able to compute the distance to the starting line, the GPS signal should be strong enough to give you some reasonnable accuracy. Most of the time, when you are on the water, in a open space, after a few seconds, the signal is good enough. (the gps indicator should be green)

After that, you have to go to the comitee boat and mark the position with the right white marker on the screen. If the precision is good enough, the marker should turn green.
Do the same with the pin and you will have your green mark.

From this moment, the application keep the distance updated.

Distance to the Line and GPS accuracy

Sail Racing is able to compute the distance to the starting based on the informations provided by the GPS.

The mathematics underneath is pretty simple and the computation itself is exact. The accuracy of the iPhone GPS , is around 10 meters at best. This value is pretty much the same than other devices used in marine positioning. The device is effectively in a circle of 5 meters of diameter centered on the GPS position. So the application that gives you the distance with 0.1 meter are not serious

It means you can get up to 5 meters of inaccuracy for the distance to the line and there is no workaround for this.

I must say that I have used a Velocitek while racing on a Melges 24 and the inaccuracy was comparable.

The point is, it would be very difficult to manage more accuracy. You would have to take in account much more precisely your position (or the postion of the iPhone) on the boat to define the value of the offset. And in the worst case, if you are the skipper and you move at each tack, you should have to correct it.

This application will help you a lot: when you are close to the start, the others boats are around and you no longer see the comitee or the pin. In this case, you need to be able to know if you are 10 or 40 meters far from the line, and Sail Racing will give you this information instantanely.

On the starting line, the application will provide you accurate informations about timing and positionning to help you get a better start.

Easy adjust and synchronisation for the countdown.

- Distance to Line :
